As with all art, the mark of musical genius is not perfection, but originality, and the opening of new frontiers. Most have been able to absorb different strands of musical traditions, styles, and cultures, and weld them into a style which is solely their own.

Concert Review: Jimi Hendrix - Isle Of Wight Festival - 31 August 1970

Isle Of Wight Festival - 1970

Jimi Hendrix

"Yeah ...Thank you very much for showing up, man, you all look really beautiful and outa sight ... Give us about a minute" - Jimi Hendrix addresses the festival crowd - Monday, Aug. 31, 1970

It is summer and I am sixteen. I look down at my brother, John, who is asleep on a small patch of ground. A patch of ground that has been our home for three days and nights. We have sleeping bags, some food and drink, body aches, and above us a dark blue sky patterned with stars and planets. Someone stole our tent the day we arrived. Our musical pilgrimage has included travel by ferries, hitchhiking day and night, sharing cars and vans with some people who engendered - within us - curiosity, terror, or both. Why? To hear and feel music played by some of the greatest musicians and bands to grace this planet.

Despite negativity in the media regarding management of the festival, unrest amongst fans, overt commercialization, drug dealers, heavy security, the attendance of Hell's Angels and so-called anarchists, I feel instilled in a carefree, happy environment. The vibe is cool and the people in our vicinity are friendly, and, like us, engrossed in the diversity of music and performers. Everyone enjoys gazing at other people in the crowd; mainly at clothes, painted faces, hair, partial nakedness.

As I walk through the crowd I regain energy from the music weaving through the air. The sounds of acoustic guitars, drums, singing, chanting; the human landscape of multi-coloured clothes, tousled hair of every shade and length, and pretty girls - some dancing in erotic fashion as the evening sun glints in their hair - arouse delight and passion. The mood and smells are intoxicating. I suddenly wish to be older. Finding my brother, and our mutual space, is aided by our closeness to the stage - 150 metres - and the positioning of numerous flags rich in diversity and colour.

Most people have witnessed memorable performances by Taste, Free, Chicago, Family, The Who, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, The Doors, and other artists. Music of all genres played by superlative musicians and bands. Days and hours of beautiful images and vibrations in the air, our hearts and souls.

It is a cold dark morning. A collective cry of joy and relief raises from the crowd (circa 600,000) as Jimi's arrival on stage is announced.

Shortly after 2.00 a.m. the eyes of those lucky to be awake - and standing - are centered on one individual walking towards the front of the stage. Jimi Hendrix is dressed in a colourful garment with long trailing sleeves. He is cradling a black and white fender stratocaster. There is no crush or discomfort, just lights, colours, darkness, people waking, coughing, rubbing their eyes. I try to wake my brother. Gradually, he opens his eyes and sits motionless. I tell him to stand; Jimi is on stage.

A cold beauty descends as I gaze at Jimi and his backdrop of daisy-chained Marshall stacks. For a moment I'm fearful of tumbling, being crushed, or losing my brother, as people start to move closer to the stage. I think of the inventive music and guitar solos Jimi has created. The first time I heard "Purple Haze" is engrained in my memory. How could someone compose such a song? The opening riff using tritones is incredible. I can hardly grasp I'm going to witness for the first time Jimi Hendrix in concert.

To me, music is an emotional roller-coaster to be experienced live; captured with your eyes and ears and if it fails to change your emotions, feelings, then move on to music that does. A live performance can't be captured on vinyl, video, CD, DVD. Such mediums fail to convey the potpourri of images, colours, sounds, and volume which make your inner being glow.

As Jimi speaks, sings, plays his guitar, the crowd watch in silence mesmerized by his magical charisma, stage presence, mercurial rhythms and soaring solos. I cheer, and shout - like most people - after each song. My tiredness replaced by immense energy.

The frost melts as Jimi plays "Spanish Castle Magic". It sounds like a hot, bright light breaking through the black, blue and white formations created by the stage lights. Jimi's guitar playing reaches a higher level; soaring, electrifying, intense. His vocals are full of sensuality, power, and during the final solo his guitar sound becomes surreal; licks, distortion, and feedback create an expansive dreamy sound.

" ... That's if we travel by our dragonfly ..."

While it is evident there are technical problems with Jimi's amplification, pedals, and guitars (mostly going out of tune) his voice, phrasing, and guitar playing are exceptional, soul-stirring. Jimi sings "All Along the Watchtower" passionately. His soloing is enhanced by feedback and infectious interplay with Billy Cox on bass. I believe Jimi is blessed to have Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass as his rhythm section. They bring out the best in Jimi. Mitch shows he is an imaginative and multi-dimensional drummer, and Billy plays fluid and tight, with a deep intuitive skill, matching Jimi pattern for pattern. Jimi's playing is remarkable as it takes different twists and turns.

The patterns weaved by Jimi and Billy Cox are hypnotic during “ Machine Gun” and once again Jimi creates some outstanding runs and sounds. Jimi plays soft, raw, loud, and seems to move in the direction of the sound he is trying to create. At times, it appears to be a struggle and there is tension in his playing. Then the rhythm changes and the trio synthesize again to paint a different musical landscape.

Adorning a “Flying V” Jimi plays a wonderful rendition of “ Red House” - Jimi played the blues as well as anyone; tasteful playing conjointly with his unique voice and phrasing. It was great to hear new numbers: “Freedom,” ”Dolly Dagger,” and “Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)”.

Jimi pulled a blistering version of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" out of the bag. His guitar sounded heavily distorted and the notes rained down sprinkled with Jimi's unique creative powers.

For Jimi, the band, and some of the audience, the show may have been uneven. However, the set showed an innovator and experimenter reaching out to his audience with his music, guitar, and colourful tapestries. I still believe Jimi's set was the defining moment of the festival. For those fortunate to come of age during the 1960's Jimi Hendrix raised the bar, and brought unparalleled power, sensuality, and sustained resurrection to guitar playing, song writing, and performance. He exuded a contagious charisma, spirit, rarely witnessed by any musician, past or present.

No-one knows what Jimi's state of mind was during his last month on this earth. I believe, however, he had new horizons to explore musically, emotionally, and spiritually. It is often forgotten while Jimi was a guitar virtuoso, and an instrumentalist of profound influence, he was also an incredibly gifted, first-rate songwriter. Jimi's vocal style - underrated in some musical quarters, including his own - complimented his guitar playing.

Jimi's artistic gifts, music, and guitar playing, will continue to astound future listeners' as long as music exists. His memorable riffs and lyrics will reverberate wherever sound can be heard. I occasionally think of this concert. I like the imperfections which make Jimi's performance like life. When I watch or listen to the music on CD, DVD, I am sad that the greatest, most innovative, and iconic guitarist of all time, died so tragically young.
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; So could Mr Trower ...

An important aspect of the tour will be the set list. According to Ray's website all dates will be with a full band and no choir which, to me, is good news. I hope the band provide the support and sound the songs of The Kinks deserve. Good to see Ray is not playing solo or accompanied by one guitarist. Some of The Kinks songs work better live with a raw, heavier sound to do them justice.

Great to see Ray has included dates at the INEC in Killarney and the "Grand Canal Theatre" in Dublin.

Tue 4th Gateshead - However, this DVD still provides proof that Michael is an outstanding guitar player who sadly remains underrated and highly imitated.

Let's be thankful Michael is still playing and looks now to be back on track.

Tracklisting:

1. This beautiful song - musically and lyrically - is just one of the many masterpieces created by Ray Davies. He is one of the major song writers of the 20th & 21st centuries. The style and subject matter unquestionably original.

The lyrics of "Waterloo Sunset" (released in 1967) seem to be based on experiences in his own life, written in the vernacular of the day - The Sixties - and the song remains a remarkable work of art over thirty years' later.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - Michael Schenker - Bristol, 20/12/09

The night after Michael was forced - due to unforeseen circumstances - to cancel his Belfast gig, he played in Bristol on 20/12/09. "Where's the money?!"

Ray sings, at Cat Greenleaf's request, a great short a capella version of Days - one of the greatest songs ever written with its finely described, beautiful lyrics, and intriguing, formidable melody.

Has Ray mellowed with age with his biggest hits now being set to choral music? The Promoter: CDC Leisure Ltd has confirmed - at short notice - that the gig has been called off.

Sounds like it may have been due to poor ticket sales even though the balcony seats were sold out. It's not the first time that the promoters' and the management of the Ulster Hall have been indecisive as to whether a show should be seated, or not, close to the date of a concert. I recall this happened with the Jeff Beck concert in June 2009. Get your act together.

Perhaps the "Spring & Airbrake" should have been used again ... great venue, great staff, great atmosphere.

Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde - "Postcard from London"

Beautiful song from Ray Davies. Jeff preformed a second song with Billy Gibbons: " Rough Boy".

On the first night Jeff Beck played with Stevie Wonder on "Superstition".

Sounds like it was mind-blowing event with some fantastic musicians performing some great songs together.

Ray Davies & Metallica - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert - 30/10/09

On the second evening of the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert" at Madison Square Gardens, New York, Metallica were joined on stage by Ray Davies. Together they played rousing versions of “You Really Got Me” and “All Day and All of the Night”. Ray seemed in fine spirits and to enjoy the performance. It confirmed he hasn't lost the ability to engross an audience with his energy, showmanship, and well-crafted songs.

It would be great to see the Kinks re-form - with Dave Davies on lead guitar - for a UK/European/US tour in 2010/2011. If, due to health reasons, Dave is unable to undertake a heavy tour schedule, I believe Ray should get a band together - a la David Bowie and Paul McCartney - that includes top-class musicians and guitar players (who can sing), and can provide the injection of energy, and authentic rock sound that Ray's wealth of material deserves. Time to set the acoustic guitar aside for most of the set, and plug in the Fender Telecaster. In fact, just Turn up the Dial .....

Ray with Metallica

Dave Bronze - Musician and Bass Player - New Official Web Site

Dave Bronze - a major player in Robin Trower's career - has a "new" official website. It looks great and gives information on Dave's career, and some of the artists he has worked with on stage or appeared with on record.

Artists include: Eric Clapton, Belinda Carlisle Roger Daltrey, Bo Diddley, Duane Eddy, Dr. Feelgood, Bryan Ferry, Robin Gibb, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Gary Moore, Billy Preston, Procol Harum, Ringo Starr, Solomon Burke, Ben E King, Joe Walsh, Paul Weller, Mary Wilson, Paul Rogers, Percy Sledge et al. An impressive list, indeed.

The site also includes details of the instruments and equipment Dave uses and recommends, and a blog. Dave was involved with Robin Trower on some "great" albums and "'live" performances, for example, Back It Up, Beyond The Mist, Passion,Take What You Need, Living Out Of Time (including the 'live' CD /DVD), Another Days Blues.

Dave is an exceptional musician and bass player who plays with great style, tone, and melody, and played on the "Grammy award-winning" tribute to George Harrison, "Concert For George (2002)".

Link: Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Dave Bronze and other musicians perform George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the "Concert for George". He was warmly welcomed by fans who were transfixed by his guitar virtuosity, warm tone, and melodic and fluid playing. I believe his group that night included Gary Bardon (vocals), Chris Glenn (bass), and Ted McKenna on drums. The keyboardist may have been Andy Nye. However, the band were in top form and the concert was outstanding. Michael's performance was a masterclass in melodic rock guitar playing. Untouchable.

The "Spring and Airbrake" proved to be a great venue to see 'Michael Schenker and Friends'. It is a small, intimate venue, and a rocking and appreciative crowd combined to create a great atmosphere. I spoke to Michael before the gig about his guitar playing, song writing, and how grateful I was he had returned to Belfast to perform. He looked in great shape all dressed in black.

From the opening number "Assault Attack" it was clear the band - with the superb Leif Sundin on vocals - would play an integral part in the show tonight. They combined to create music that was tight, emotional, rich in sound, yet full of tension, delicacy and subtle balances that made the music vibrant and intoxicating. There wasn't a weak song in the set list which comprised fourteen songs, and each one had the crowd singing, clapping and cheering throughout the performance. When a song ended it was clear to Michael and the band that the crowd was in the mood to rock to great music.

"Let it Roll" and "Lights Out" were superb with Michael soloing in his own distinctive memorable style. He plays such strong fluid melodic runs and subtle bends he is amazing to watch. A particular favourite of mine is "Into The Arena" which was outstanding tonight. Most of the crowd sang along with Lief Sundin on most of the songs, especially "To Hot To Handle" and "Only You Can Rock Me" creating an unbelievable atmosphere.

After rousing renditions of "Armed and Ready" and "Axeman" it was evident the crowd was not going to let Michael and his friends of the stage without hearing more music. It was great to see Michael getting the attention he truly deserves, and to see him looking and sounding as good as ever. The whole band was incredible - especially Leif Sundin on vocals - and they provided excellent support for Michael to work his magic.

The band returned for an encore which included " Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom". By this time nearly everyone was singing along with the lyrics and thumping the air. The riff to "Rock Bottom" is an all-time classic. If you don't feel like moving your body to it, and it doesn't transfer you somewhere intoxicating and special - well, frankly - there's no hope for you. The soloing during "Rock Bottom" was full of well-controlled vibratos, soft harmonic runs. and blistering lead runs. Need I say more. Michael's back and this time he means business.

Michael returns to Belfast on 19 December 2009 to perform at the Ulster Hall, Belfast. Should be a truly great night.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405476193562911042" style="DISPLAY: block; I prefer to see Jeff playing on stage with his own band for the whole show. We are all exceptional cases, of course. It brings out the worse [sic] in those involved behind the music scene, for example, record companies, marketing, distribution. In essence - everyone - except the musician(s) who created and recorded the music in the first instance. This is not the first compilation to be made using Rory's name - brand - if you like.

"The Best Of Taste" - Amazon: Price: £3.98 - 16 tracks (What will happen to the "Isle of Wight " footage of Taste is anyone's guess?)

"Big Guns: the Very Best of Rory Gallagher" - Amazon: Price: £2.98 - 15 tracks

"Crest of a Wave: The Best of Rory Gallagher" - Amazon: Price £16.09 - 24 tracks

The current double disc "Greatest Hits" highlights Rory's passion, tremendous musicianship, and outstanding guitar playing. However, in the music industry these attributes don't always equate with happiness and success. This catalogue may introduce a new generation to Rory, but I somehow doubt it. Rory was a cult hero to his fans. However, he never reached the pinnacle of success he sought, or deserved. It takes courage and extreme energy to write the songs, sing the songs, play lead guitar, and to be the main focus of a band over decades.

I'm thankful Rory received a degree of success, but the music industry has a darker side. It must be hard to survive in the business for so long without great moments of despair.

I'm thankful for the Internet; sites like YouTube where people can share and watch footage of Rory live in concert, and keep his memory alive. In another ten years' there may not be CDs or DVDs, but Rory's music will still get through.

CD1

1. Follow Me
2. Shinkicker
3. The sun has come out and reflects strongly on the buildings, windows, buses, and cars below as I gaze from my hotel room. I'm interested to hear who Kirsty Young's castaway will be this morning on "Desert Island Discs". As I drink tea I'm pleased to hear it is the impresario and promoter, Harvey Goldsmith CBE - Jeff Beck's manager from January this year. I sit down and listen. As he speaks, it is clear he is knowledgeable, intelligent, determined, temperamental, someone who deals with conflicts and obstacles swiftly and effectively, and has a talent for organisation, and getting things done.

I am intrigued regarding his choice of music ranging from "Kasmir" (Led Zeppelin), "Baba O'Reilly" (The Who - his favourite 'live' band at their peak with Keith Moon), to the live version of " Nadia" of Jeff's amazingly, successful DVD/CD, Performing This Week - Live At Ronnie Scott's. His insights into the music industry, management, and the organisation of large-scale events proves compelling. Indeed, his passionate statements that Jeff Beck is a "genius," and that "... the artist has to change emotions inside you. Few musicians have this ability ..." are painstakingly legitimate.

Jeff Beck has become one of the most striking performer's in the history of the guitar. While he has played the guitar for several decades he continually seeks new ways to ply his art, develop, and renew his music. Indeed, his musical output, and guitar playing, is a delicate fusion of all the influences he has sought, explored, and absorbed. He is a guitar player with a "real" difference who tends not to sound bland. No easy task.

Jeff's return to The Royal Albert Hall has attracted fans from around the globe. Outside the venue I spoke to some people who had traveled from Sweden, Italy, and New Jersey. An exuberant, tribal gathering had come to secure Jeff's place as one of rock's genuine icons. Inside, the hall was packed to capacity; the audience murmured with expectation. I was fortunate to be seated in the eighteenth row with a clear view of the stage.

From the moment the band took to the stage, and began the whispered, rhythmic accompaniment to "Beck's Bolero" - Jeff entered "stage right" clad all in white, playing the melody on his cream and white strat - it was clear the sound was warm and mixed to perfection. Not as loud as in Belfast, but the band performed with incredible confidence, bar some momentary glitches. While Jeff's confidence is clearly at an all time high - long may it last - there were moments during the concert when Jeff - and fellow band members - appeared overly conscious and, to a degree, overawed by the intimacy and atmosphere of the occasion. However, an exchange of smiles, a flurry of nimble fingers, and drum sticks, restored calm, and once more the band scaled new heights of musical triumph.

The hypnotic rhythm to "Pump" made you want to clap your hands, stand up, and rush the stage. Not acceptable behavior at the venue, I'm sorry to say. However, the combination of Tal Wilkenfeld's bass playing and sound, combined with Vinnie Colaiuta's drumming was intoxicating. Then Jeff entered with his beautiful tone, melodies, and virtuosity which the rest of the group complemented, driving him to play licks that astound, confound, inspire, taking you on a beautiful journey.

A run of songs let Jeff and the band explore different rhythms and sounds which were a delight to the eyes and ears. From the achingly beautiful melodies and rhythms, of "Behind the Veil," "Angel," and "Nadia," to wonderful, intricate, drumming by Vinnie, the characteristic weaving of lines by Tal on her bass, overlaid with keyboard voicings by Jason Rebello, made "Space Boogie," and "Led Boots" alternatively sweet and nasty. Sometimes the music appeared to be stretched in a particular direction - like an elastic band - to a point where it is about to break, then it turned, and retracted in another direction. Jeff continually displayed an ability to play with restraint and subtlety, without losing intensity.

Sometimes when Jeff plays the introduction to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" I wish he would play the full version as included on the Wired album, and play "Brush with the Blues" separately. Tonight belonged to Jeff and his band, and perhaps my preference for only "one guest" on stage was at variance with others in attendance. So be it.

After a great, fast, rocky version of "Blue Wind" the band was joined by Imelda May to sing "Lilac Wine," (a song written by James Shelton in 1950). In my opinion, however, Imelda does not possess the raw, haunting voice required to create the emotion and passion the song deserves.

The music Jeff and his band played tonight went beyond black and white. It contained a myriad of different colours and shades that danced and stimulated an engrossed audience. Jeff, Tal, Vinnie, and Jason bowed, and left the stage amid resounding applause, and a standing ovation. Tonight Jeff, and his band not only touched the hearts of the faithful, but - I believe - those witnessing them for the first time.

For two of the encores, Jeff and his band were joined on stage by David Gilmore to perform "Jerusalem," and "Hi Ho Silver Lining". Some fans speculated that Jimmy Page, or Eric Clapton, would participate at the event. In the end David Gilmore proved to be a good choice. Both guitarist's seemed to enjoy playing together, and while each has a distinctive style and tone, they proved inventive, and appeared to play their guitar's without effort. Jeff returned and played "Where were You" His performance was emotional and beautiful.

After the show I walked to the stage door where a considerable number of fans were waiting for Jeff to sign albums, CDs, DVDs, and other memorabilia. Most people seemed to be singing or humming "Hi Ho Silver Lining," while others' talked about the emotional and entertaining performance. I heard strands of, "How does he play like that?" Several fans took photographs of Jeff's set list I had acquired from the stage. I was aware an "after-party" may be in progress to celebrate the success of the event for Jeff, the band, the crew, and organisers'. Needless to say, some fans had flights to catch in the middle of the night. I caught the bus to King's Cross, and made my way to Islington. As I walked, the breathtaking music from the concert flooded through my mind.

Jeff's Set List

Jeff, Vinnie, Tal, and Jason in full swing

Blowing up a storm

I just happen to be the guy with the long hair and the white shirt center stage - the first to get out of his seat and go to the front before the encores. Politician

It is strange this album is not listed at the official Robin Trower Store - or that Jack Bruce is not included on the "Links" page of Robin's official site. I'm not suprised that "We're Going Wrong" and "I'm Home" are not included on the 'Live' CD - they sounded listless and lacking in atmosphere in concert. Jack's vocal delivery on both tracks was poor live, and I was grateful when both songs ended.

The release of "What Lies Beneath" - in my view - overshadows Robin's recent collaboration with Jack Bruce in the studio, and in concert. I'd like to see Robin touring again with Livingston Brown on bass and vocals, and Pete Thompson on drums. Call it "The What Lies Beneath" tour. Robin has reached new heights of creativity on his recent album, which I believe, surpasses most of the music of "Seven Moons".

Future Rock Legends - Vote to get Robin Trower into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

After playing with The Paramounts and Procol Harum in the ‘60s and early ‘70s Robin Trower recorded his seminal album "Twice Removed From Yesterday" in 1972. The subsequent tour in 1973 highlighted how far Robin had progressed as a guitarist, performer and songwriter. His second album, “Bridge of Sighs”, was certified gold without promotion of a single release. Future albums, and regular touring, continued to emphasize Robin’s guitar playing prowess.

Undoubtedly Robin is endowed with talents that include being a truly creative guitarist with a distinctive sound, and inspired song writing ability. Robin is one of the top guitar players of all time; up there with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, and Peter Green [et al].

He possesses a rare power and spirit that has not been diminished by his long musical career. His music and playing continues to have an indefinable purity – blending blues, soul, funk, R&B, jazz, etc., with a passion and fire other musicians only possess in their dreams.

Recent tours and albums have proved highly successful in the UK, Europe and US, and Robin continues to ply his art with genuine ardour. I consider Robin to be one of the finest musician's to originate from England, and he is one of the few to make a big impact in the US. Some talented musicians grow into maturity and then decline swiftly or slowly. Robin isn’t one of those – he continues to mature musically, play with creativity and passion, and is an inspiration to musicians , fans and music lovers alike.

I believe Robin, on merit, deserves to be inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame". Please cast your vote for Robin using the link below:

VOTE FOR ROBIN TROWER

Thanks for voting!

Robin Trower and Jack Bruce - O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, London - 5/8/09

According to Jack Bruce the set list for the current short tour with Robin Trower will comprise all - or most - of the eleven tracks from their collaborative album, "Seven Moons". The rest of the set will include the usual "classics" from Jack, 'Politician,' 'White Room,' 'Sunshine of your Love,' 'We're Going Wrong.' Only 'Carmen' from "B.L.T." will be included in the set. It is disappointing Robin and Jack have elected to play again - live - the whole of the "Seven Moons" album which, I believe, has its share of unmelodious songs, and dismal lyrics.

Some of the songs from the "B.L.T." or "Truce" albums - both released in 1981 - deserve inclusion in the set, and would provide a much needed change in tempo, light and shade, during the performance. During the earlier short tour, the music was - at intervals - pedestrian. Robin and Jack possess the skill, virtuosity, and confidence, to create a set that highlights their collaborative body of work in better light. It is evident Jack's vocal delivery on some of the tracks 'live' cause him some difficulty; the keys to some songs have been changed to decrease the stress on Jack's vocal chords, and, indeed, overall health.

It's a shame Robin and Jack never found time in their busy schedules to tour together during the ' 90s. Whether the current concerts, and the album "Seven Moons," stand the test of time is anyone's guess.

Concert Review: Jeff Beck - Ulster Hall, Belfast - 30 June 2009

Belfast is anything but dull. The city centre oscillates between menace and refurbished high culture. The recently renovated Ulster Hall is a fitting venue for Jeff Beck's first concert in Ireland. The Victorian Hall has played host to some of the finest artists and groups to grace this planet, including Rory Gallagher, Taste, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, and Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green. I'm sitting in the sixth row - centre stage - I give in to nostalgia, and think of some of the great concerts I have experienced at this venue. I visualise the artists', and hear fragments of their music with each beat of my pulse. After the support act, the absence of a vocalist, you feel, will not be missed when the main act takes to the stage. The auditorium is silent, in semi-darkness, the stage looks larger. I gaze at the red backdrop which creates a sunken world of calm and expectation. The lights dim.

Tonight - a sold-out audience - is treated to an absorbing performance by Jeff Beck and his powerhouse of a band incorporating drummer, Vinnie Colaiuta; keyboardist, Jason Rebello; and bass guitarist, Tal Wilkenfeld. Time to forget the 'Credit Bubble', the Internet, DVDs, CDs, vinyl - most fans, music lovers, want to see their musical heroes in the flesh. And there is no substitute for the atmosphere, tension, and emotion, an inspired and engaging band can generate live in concert.

The success of Jeff's recent release, 'Jeff Beck: Performing This Week - Live At Ronnie Scott's' on DVD, Blu-Ray and CD, the celebrated performance at the 'Crossroads Guitar Festival' in Chicago, 2007, Jeff's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 4 April 2009, and new management - Harvey Goldsmith - have helped to invigorate Jeff's career, and standing in the music industry.

Tonight, Jeff walks onto the stage dressed in black, with a white scarf draped around his neck, and cradling his cream and white stratocaster. The applause is deafening, heartfelt. I believe Jeff and the band are genuinely taken aback by the warm reception. The band starts the performance with 'Becks Bolero' and it is clear the sound balance is excellent, and each band member is crystal clear in the mix. Somehow, Jeff and his band make the music sound fresh, as if woven for the first time.

What makes a good performance? Perhaps, dialogue between the musicians on stage. While creating their own voice and space - each musician, tonight - seems to bend and shape the music to maximum effect, and the combined output goes straight to your emotions, your soul. Something, not all musicians achieve.

Vinnie and Tal begin the hypnotic rhythm to 'Pump', and Tal's bass sound is beautifully warm; you could listen to it all night. A lot of people comment on her playing - which speaks for itself - but the diverse tones she gets from her bass, amps, and effects pedals are astounding. During the sixteen-number set it is evident the deep intuitive skills displayed by Vinnie, Tal, and Jason, provide a strong canvas for Jeff to paint a colourful array of sounds from his guitar.

Jeff plays with warmth, finesse, and an impish quality which permeates the group, and creates an extraordinary bond with the audience. The band truly seem astounded by the warm reception after each song, and exchange smiles. A great version of 'You Never Know ' follows, which sets the high standard of musicianship, and sound, that Jeff and his band reach during the rest of the performance.

Who could not be moved by the sublime 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers' - beautiful sounds and melodies emanating from Jeff's guitar, and inspired soloing by Tal. It digs deep into the twilight room of the soul, creating a dizzy sense of magic. Does music get better than this? I doubt it. During the set Jeff moves around the stage, sometimes changing direction when the music changes course. Periodically, he exchanges a cheerful smile with a fellow band member, and continues to play his guitar with a naturalness few guitarist's attain. Each song was a highlight. If music is a dream, then this has been one of the greatest of them all.

Jeff Beck has risen above his contemporaries and peers. Eric Clapton expired, suffocated by his own tediousness. Jimmy Page was there, but can't repeat it. The Led Zeppelin albums, however, remain a testament to his genius, and that of Robert Plant. Jeff was always there, without thinking about it. He is a consummate musician by profession - always has been - now he wears the 'Crown'. Tonight, great music was played by great musicians, fronted by a guitarist who can truly be called a genius. Jeff and the band were visibly moved by the two 'five minute' standing ovations they received.

After the concert Jeff, Tal, Jason and Vinnie, were generous with their time, and were in great spirits. Along with many others, I hope they return to the Ulster Hall, and Belfast soon. The warm and passionate reception received tonight, awaits them again.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361475456071256610" style="DISPLAY: block; He played the guitar in his own unique way; with authenticity and thunderous passion. A handsome, charismatic and humble man, Rory connected with audiences - and his many fans throughout the world - in a way other musicians' only dream of. He still lives on in each fan's heart, mind, spirit - call it what you will.

As a performer he was an engaging and exceptional showman. Sometimes music has a tendency to be boring due to an artist's - or a band's - quest for perfection in the recording studio and playing in concert. While Rory was a perfectionist (which has its own ramifications), I believe the music he created on stage had a sense of danger, passion and improvisation that engaged each member of his audience.

His continual search to be effective, sincere, and the use of improvisation and spontaneity, bolstered his performances in ways that the mediums of record, or film, can never fully capture. However, Rory's music and performances captured on film continue to shine with truth, integrity and warmth.

If I had one word to describe Rory's personality, output, and 'live' shows, it would be "sincerity". Rory was born with a considerable gift for music, guitar playing, performing and touching the lives of fellow human beings. There have been - and will continue to be - great musicians' who grace us with their gift, vision, craft, and I respect their genuine differences. I still feel Rory's music and guitar playing deserves a wider audience. New listener's will be intrigued by the music Rory left behind, and the performances caught on film.

The tribute video below contains photographs of Rory's Fender Stratocaster on display in Dublin; interior & exterior shots in Donegal - close to Rory's birthplace of Ballyshannon - and Central Park, N.Y.

"Out on the Western Plain" - traditional arrangement by Ronnie Kerrigan - vocals & acoustic guitar (August 1995).

Concert Review: Robin Trower - The Brook, Southampton - 28 May 2008

Sentimentality, or nostalgia, does not bring me back to listen to Robin Trower’s music or to witness his ‘live’ performances – it is his art, humility - and, above all, it is one of the joys in life. My brother, John, and I flew in from Belfast on the day of the concert.

The Brook is a great venue to see and hear a band.Tonight it was evident the sound system and stage monitors were operating at optimum level; the vocals and individual instruments were well balanced (Laurie Brace at the sound desk deserves praise). The venue was filled to capacity and tonight there was a wealth of smiles, shaking heads and clapping hands - and that was before the music started – must be the water in Portswood!

Robin's playing and soloing, the band - Pete, Glenn and Davey - the fans, the venue, and staff all contributed to one of the best concerts I've attended. After the Paris gig I thought the dizzy heights the band reached that night would not be attained again on this tour – I was, thankfully, mistaken. The RTB were given a great, warm welcome when they arrived on stage, and from the sound of ‘’Twice Removed From Yesterday” you knew it was going to be an exceptional night. The whole band seemed to be in great spirits; each number in the set was played with enthusiasm and zest.

Robin played like only a virtuoso can, accompanied by an excellent band that generated warmth and intensity. I believe when Huddie William Leadbetter “Leadbelly” said “No white man ever had the blues” he was mistaken. Robin is a blues guitarist of the highest calibre, capable of creating music that touches your soul - most fans tonight, I’m sure, felt totally connected to the music. Performances this magical never leave the memory. Pete and Glenn provided a superb rhythm section for Robin to fly above with his solos. Tonight Davey’s vocals could be heard clearly and were great on “Shame the Devil”, “Day of the Eagle”, “No Time” and “For Earth Below”. Robin seems to be playing with greater zeal during the solos on this tour – how he achieves it at 63 is beyond me? – long may it continue.

The vibe and soloing during “The Fool And Me”, “No Time” and “Rise Up Like The Sun” was exceptional.A welcoming cheer and clapping always accompanies the trill at the beginning of “Bridge of Sighs” – tonight it is a roar. The band and the crowd are as one. Robin’s playing is so spontaneous; he just feels the vibe and goes with it. During the solo he indicated to the band to take it up a notch and he began to make his guitar wail for a few minutes gradually falling to a whisper - enthralling. While it’s great to listen to the studio version, or one of the numerous recorded live versions, nothing beats hearing this song played live when you are there. I believe it only truly exists each time Robin plays it – when the sound is hitting you from the stage, and Robin is completely lost in his art. To me great music and guitar playing – as evidenced tonight - provides release from conscious thought, engenders tranquillity, and has a wonderful therapeutic value.

Thanks to Robin, Pete, Davey and Glenn for a truly riveting concert. Also, thanks for enhancing the evening after the performance by your friendliness. It was the icing on the cake. Also, Laurie for being Laurie. Some great photographs and memories. It was great to meet up with Angie again – hope you enjoyed the Guinness? Also, Alan Howard, Jim Pearce and John Waters.

Thanks also to Dylan Clarke, Manager at The Brook, whose kindness and co-operation helped to make the concert special for my brother, John, and I. It’s a great venue with great staff and facilities. Just wish it wasn’t so far away. It will be hard to beat tonight’s concert, atmospheric crowd and venue.

Setlist: Twice Removed From Yesterday, Shame The Devil, For Earth Below, No Time, The Fool And Me, Roads To Freedom, Islands, Day Of The Eagle, Bridge Of Sighs, Rise Up Like The Sun, Victims Of The Fury, Gonna Be More Suspicious, Hannah, Little Bit Of Sympathy, , Too Rolling Stoned,Go My Way Another Time Another Place,
